I'm thinking about starting a completely open source social media platform to counteract a lot of the noise on Facebook, Twitter, etc. -- Users get full control over what content they can filter. Rich API for researchers with no restrictions to data for research purposes, etc.

That's a good question. The premise that I would envision would to have it open source and available to any researcher who wants to analyze data without restrictions (no limit to how far one can search, etc.). What do you think?

I think you’d have to be careful about how things like friend networks and other seemingly innocuous data can be used to gather information that can be identifiable or used for wide scale manipulation— users of a platform might not understand this in giving access to certain data
