I'm thinking about starting a completely open source social media platform to counteract a lot of the noise on Facebook, Twitter, etc. -- Users get full control over what content they can filter. Rich API for researchers with no restrictions to data for research purposes, etc.

I have not heard of it but I'll definitely check it out. Any details on how long it has been around and who created it?

I've always wondered if you could do the Stack overflow transparency model for social media, but I think scalability is the limiting factor in the long run.

Are you interested in making it fully end2end encrypted to protect user’s privacy? Also, you can check out our product at Maskbook.io . We are making it to fight against the current large platforms ;)

Good question. At this point I'm just looking at the logistics of it. That's a good question to consider, though.

To help mitigate spam and also incentivize users think about integrating Bitcoin (BCH). There is one site that has tried this already called Memo.cash. You can learn more about Bitcoin here: bitcoin.com/what-is-bitcoi

Ello, Mastodon and Diaspora. None of them have anything to really get people hooked. I wish there was another option. I really liked having both a Facebook and a MySpace. I also liked having several bad search engines though as well.
