My opinion of data visualization is that visuals should always convey as much information in a meaningful way as possible, and different visualizations do that for different types of data. For instance, in the image you show, why have a bunch of grey-scale slices? What is being

compared here? If the grey slices are not important, why not combine them with an "other" label where you can still draw an inference about the main data that you've chosen to isolate and describe.

I still wanted to show that, in each location, there was a lot of variability in the linguistic feature I was discussing so kept the shades of grey.
