unpopular opinion- "software engineer" should be illegal unless you have licensure as determined by your jurisdiction. It gives a false impression of how high the error rates are in code, relative to say civil engineering.

I don't think it's an unpopular opinion but software "engineering" is much different than other engineering fields. Will they have certifications dependent on the language? Basic CS concepts? "Esoteric" situations (SQL injections, etc. Do we have a SQL test?)

I think if licensure happened, it would be for embedded software (rockets, medical equipment), not for web forum software. Calling the later engineers is confusing title inflation. Calling the former engineers without licensure is misleading.
