Plenty of people start in our research organization and then migrate onto product teams! Vice versa too of course. The point is that working your PhD creates a recency bias toward valuing research higher in and of itself, rather than considering each opportunity clearly.

Fair, but it’s worth acknowledging that many of us came to a PhD with non-research experience. I left a challenging (and often impactful) job after careful consideration of my interests/strengths. I’m sure the right job could convince me, but it’d be a blow to give up on research

At least at Google, a lot of product work involves research and experimentation, though much (maybe most) won’t lead to publication, and you can’t choose your topic as flexibly as on research teams.
