MORE CAR BREAK-INS: A witness just sent me this video of another smash and grab in San Francisco. This happened today around 3p at Fillmore & Union Streets. Witnesses say they called @SFPD. @kron4news pic.twitter.com/G2rErb7gEj

If these aren't recidivist cases but more like rampant opportunists, then changes in leadership alone won't be sufficient in helping to solve the problem. How to counter the apparent sense that it's a free-for-all candy store?

NY was the same way until they got someone tough on crime. I know it’s viewed as racist now, but that’s not my intent. There’s already a playbook out there for how to turn this around. Maybe we can learn from it and do it in a better way.

Good point. I recall a certain NYC mayor once notable for that, though his popularity didn't age well, even if for perhaps unrelated reasons. It could certainly be done in a better way. I'm curious what those ways might actually be.

Yeah, he didn’t age well, but NY was a cesspool, and they turned it around. Unfortunately, NY is possibly becoming that same cesspool. SF is already there. It’s so sad. But, the pendulum will swing…. I’m going to write a rock ballad “The Pendulum Will Swing.” Good, right???

Double entendre rarely fails at its singular purpose. I'm from NYC so I've seen that change from both sides. This may just be a "city" problem writ large. The more humans, the more inhumanity.

Nah, I disagree. Your last lines indicate that you’ve given up. Strength begets strength. Weakness begets weakness. No offense, but if you’ve given up, that’s weakness, and that’s part of the problem. It takes a really strong person to lead that many people.

It's an observation of the trend, not a prognostication. Trajectories can be altered, yes. Consensus on values and strategies is probably more of the problem than strong leadership.

So much to unpack here, and I’ve probably drank too much bourbon to unpack anything. Summation: we have consensus on values - you just have to listen. We NEED leadership that can actually execute.

I think the balance of authoritarian extremes on both of the far sides of the political divide is the key, else we have trouble defining who is "we".
