I won’t be the only one posting this video today: Gang Of Four’s astounding appearance in the movie Urgh! A Music War. Andy Gill was a force of nature, a force of technology, a force of humanity, all in one. RIP.

Gang Of Four wasn't a band that made you FEEL. They didn't have the soulful depth of Joy Division or the sinister glee of PiL. They were distanced, analytical. They were postpunk theoreticians, and their Situationist disco echoed the idea that the artist was necessarily alien.

The reason Gang Of Four's socioeconomic message hit so hard is that they DIDN'T show emotion or invite the listener in. They were late-capitalist avatars of depersonalization, detachment, disconnection. And all those things, amazingly, were reflected in Andy Gill's guitar.

One thing that's always bugged me: how Gill's guitar has been reduced to reductionist descriptors like "fractured" or "angular." On their first four albums (yes, including the unfairly underrated Hard), Gill's sound was everything from brittle to atmospheric to chiming to brutal.

More importantly, Andy Gill's guitar mimicked the jumble of signals and symbols in late-capitalist popular music: a language of coded self-branding, sexual advertisement, and the commodification of conflicts both personal and political. His riffs were maps of pop's paradox.

As a nerdy little Marxist punk in high school, I latched onto Gang of Four like they were made for me. They bridged the gap between two of my favorite bands -- The Clash and Fugazi -- and Andy Gill's guitar playing inspired me to approach the instrument as a machine of ideas.

" Frustration, angst, anger, irony, revolution in riffs."-perfect! I remember first hearing Natural's Not In It: the lyrics were all so tongue-in-cheek but contrasted with those urgent, slightly sinister guitar riffs.
