This data goes from Avast Antivirus, which has 435 million users, to a subsidiary called Jumpshot, to dozens of companiespic.twitter.com/7lHuucg5P7
This data is marketed to companies as “Every search. Every click. Every buy. On every site."
This was a collaboration between @Michael_Kan of PCMag and @josephfcox — here's Michael's piece, which digs deeper into how easy it is to de-anonymize this datahttps://www.pcmag.com/news/the-cost-of-avasts-free-antivirus-companies-can-spy-on-your-clicks …
couple last things 1) Notable that Conde Nast buys this data to follow its readers on other websites 2) Real user data shows searches on porn websites and specific videos watched, and, as multiple researchers told us, it's trivially easy to deanonymize this datapic.twitter.com/xnJKPlvDAL
After Avast got its browser extension kicked off Chrome, Opera, and Firefox for its data collection, it began asking users to opt-in from the antivirus itself, which offers much deeper access to users' computerspic.twitter.com/o7KqeQ4IpF
"Avast" me maties, is a pirate company. Installed it once on a Mac and deleted immediately after one virus scan. The clue is in the company name, the scurvy dogs.
Hmm; why is this a surprise? Free is not free; ever!
Soon enough following privacy, transparency should be the next big thing!
I don’t need a leaked document for that, it has been clear since 1979 when I got my first mobile phone that I would never be invisible again
