Apple also didn't say *anything* of substance to Medium. It didn't say how many AirPods its recycled or provide guide for recycling them. It didn't say what contractual specs of recycling them are

This is not "opening up:" “As with all of our products, we work closely with our recyclers to ensure AirPods are properly recycled and provide support to recyclers outside of our supply chain as well” This means nothing

also .... who is mailing their AirPods to Apple ... raise your hands please... no one is mailing their AirPods to Apple

To be clear, the more people writing about this issue, the better. Will got recyclers to say that they're not seeing AirPods, which is notable, and getting Apple to say anything about recycling at all is an achievement

I just wish Apple would actually talk about recycling and repair issues in a substantive way that goes beyond occasional statements and stuff on background. Facebook doesn't *want* to talk about content moderation but it does because enough people have signaled its important

I can absolutely understand and relate to your frustration. But it's not true that Apple "planted the story" with me. I got interested after reading
@carolineha_'s epic takedown and started digging on my own. I actually didn't expect Apple to talk, as I say in the piece:pic.twitter.com/j2DY4wFWX1

Why is this the bar and seemingly ‘ok’? I don’t understand how they think this is a good / ok response.pic.twitter.com/bRmmt31XcC

Why would you honor an off-the-record request for them to yell at you?

Well done Apple, problem solved. Over to you Android vendors with ‘billions’ of cheap plastic handsets with a shorter life expectancy than AirPods. Let’s see your recycling strategies!

This one is interesting for Apple, as they may have backed themselves into a corner: a great product that’s largely adding to ewaste in landfill 2-3 years down the track. The trade off is lower failure rate in the phones by eliminating the headphone jack ?
-
Is a steady stream of broken/exhausted AirPods net better outcome, than a higher percentage of phones breaking and themselves ending up in landfill ? Justifying the trade-off with data would really require opening the kimono.
-
Maybe AirPods are evil, but they are the lesser wrong ?
