New Senate Judiciary hearing thread. CEOs of Facebook and Twitter. @LindseyGrahamSC rightly doesn't want govt regulating info on social platforms but concerned about their power. So yes, I agree, an antitrust issue specifically with Facebook and ties directly to data policy.

Back to antitrust.
@SenBlumenthal asks Zucka about whether Facebook used acquired Onavo surveillance data in its decision to acquire WhatsApp. Zucka confirms usage as it’s in publicly available documents. FTC antitrust lawsuit must come soon. Blumenthal mentions company breakup.Show this thread -
This is a super good thread to accompany testimony today. Twitter and Dorsey really deserve praise. Even the ack of their lack of a policy for retroactive enforcement decisions where there is plenty of reporting on how Facebook has given into its lobbyists over political risk.https://twitter.com/jack/status/1328721286474788865 …

And
@JohnCornyn cites Brandeis about more speech (sunlight being the best disinfectant). Dorsey rightly points out that their labels and enforcement encourage even more speech and their labels are also more speech not less avoiding take-downs.Show this thread -
Reminder: Facebook covered up what was ultimately understood as a massive election security incident paying off $5B to avoid further deposition and scrutiny. It connected directly to Bannon. We don’t know what Bannon has over Zuckerberg beyond obviously his influence network.https://twitter.com/rgoodlaw/status/1328731258172678145 …

by the way, since content moderation is a focus of hearing, I'll re-share this thread to a concern I raised a few weeks ago based on leaked docs. Facebook has yet to respond publicly or privately. I think I'll write more on it tonight.https://twitter.com/jason_kint/status/1322179114946756608?s=20 …

Oh c’mon. Zuckerberg deflected on whether his platform may be addictive. He knows full well they’ve made design decisions with that goal in mind. Better answer from Dorsey to just acknowledge the platform risk and need to combat it.

And a body needs picked up.... As previously seen with Google, Senator Hawley
@HawleyMO entirely gets Facebook’s business model is almost entirely built on surveillance advertising.pic.twitter.com/w0bW9UhHmhShow this thread -
Wow. And this.
@SenAmyKlobuchar asks Twitter CEO re: Facebook’s anticompetitive conduct. Background: “Twitter launched Vine today...Unless anyone raises objections, we will shut down their friends API access today.” “Yup, go for it,” replied Zuckerberg, according to the docs.pic.twitter.com/ZVDpLLP4v2Show this thread -
Watch
@SenAmyKlobuchar also grimace as Zuckerberg deflects weaponizing its $5B settlement with FTC to threaten NYU cybersecurity researchers who are anonymously and publicly disclosing Facebook’s political ads and importantly microtargeting info. cc@LauraEdelson2@FBoversightpic.twitter.com/0LKgr205SQShow this thread

Totally evaded the topic of algorithms. What Jack said makes sense. We should put pressure on FB for their algos.
