When you said it, I thought it was because women were probably much better shoppers than men. They were keeping the household while the men were off working and fighting wars and being, well, men. (Not saying that's how it should be, but how it was.)

面白かった。そういえば、先週「日本人の知らない日本語」という漫画で 他の漢字の起源について読みました。 たとえば「取る」の起源が戦争の時代からです。「戦争の時敵を倒した証拠に耳を取った」ということです。怖いですよね。
