Very interesting. I read something about foreigners complaining that many JP ppl reply in English when spoken to in Japanese. What I do when addressing Japanese ppl is to start with "あの。。" to signal that I'm going to speak JP ppl.

Oh yeah for sure! Sorry I didn't mean to make it sound like it was only in Japan :). In my experience, sometimes, even if I speak Japanese, they act like what I said wasn't in Japanese at all! Ahah. I read online that maybe they don't expect you to speak Japanese so when you do
