Very interesting. I read something about foreigners complaining that many JP ppl reply in English when spoken to in Japanese. What I do when addressing Japanese ppl is to start with "あの。。" to signal that I'm going to speak JP ppl.

Japanese people tend to think they are being nice by making things easier for them. And it doesn't happen just in Japan. The same thing happened to me when I was abroad too.

Oh yeah for sure! Sorry I didn't mean to make it sound like it was only in Japan :). In my experience, sometimes, even if I speak Japanese, they act like what I said wasn't in Japanese at all! Ahah. I read online that maybe they don't expect you to speak Japanese so when you do
