    This got me thinking about whether all-encompassing ideologies are advantageous or not. On display here is a whole extra set of social norms and beliefs about gender, in addition to core economic positions.

    Mostow rigidity is a doozy: say M, N are complete finite volume hyperbolic manifolds of dimension at least 3. Then any homotopy equiv M -> N is induced by a unique isometry. Geometry is free!

    When was the last time you were shocked by a theorem? Not the proof but by the statement itself.

    One example that I’ve seen a few times is the insistence that Australia’s gun control policies had substantial effects on the overall homocide rate. Looking at data from Aus govt gives nothing of the sort, and yet...?

    Here's a cute, short paper on heuristic arguments for the finiteness of Fermat primes (). As a Tl;dr: we know 2^(2^n)+1 is prime for n=0,1,2,3,4 and composite for the next few choices of n. We don't know if these are all the primes, but we think so!

    Maybe this seems unusual, but it's real. Hagaromo really is better than other chalk, and people really do have stashes. Not even a contest.

    I often struggle to communicate how much absolutely bizarre stuff there was in the pure math community to outsiders, but this video captures a small part of it: the obsession with an almost extinct kind of Japanese chalk.

    This may correlate with something I also believe, which is that the ability to generate original ideas is shockingly underrated to the point that people don’t recognize them even when confronted head on. (4/4)
