Two weeks ago, with the help of Egyptologist and Microbiologist , I went to Boston’s MFA and ’s to attempt collecting 4,500 year old yeast from Ancient Egyptian pottery. Today, I baked with some of it...

Too little in common and infighting sinks the boat. Too much and your tent covers ε area.

Do movements strangle themselves by requiring a worldview from followers rather than being just approximately collinear in direction?

This got me thinking about whether all-encompassing ideologies are advantageous or not. On display here is a whole extra set of social norms and beliefs about gender, in addition to core economic positions.

Deep breath. A skull bone from a cave in southern Greece is reported as oldest Homo sapiens fossil ever discovered in Europe. 4 times older than prior modern human finds on the continent, it dates back a staggering 210k years! has the lowdown:

Changed my mind: 2) is wrong and utilitarianism is bad. In fact, moral systems are bad. Use your moral sense instead.

Every math department should order this book as student resource. Discouragement by others is (sadly) very common in mathematical struggles. May these 41 stories (including one from me) encourage you to persist.

Mostow rigidity is a doozy: say M, N are complete finite volume hyperbolic manifolds of dimension at least 3. Then any homotopy equiv M -> N is induced by a unique isometry. Geometry is free!

This is a really good synopsis of deformations from char p to char 0 (Witt vectors and beyond) and what they’re good for

One example that I’ve seen a few times is the insistence that Australia’s gun control policies had substantial effects on the overall homocide rate. Looking at data from Aus govt gives nothing of the sort, and yet...?

And even when the data is correct, phantom perceptions of it that just aren’t correct propogate wildly.

Here's a cute, short paper on heuristic arguments for the finiteness of Fermat primes (). As a Tl;dr: we know 2^(2^n)+1 is prime for n=0,1,2,3,4 and composite for the next few choices of n. We don't know if these are all the primes, but we think so!

Maybe this seems unusual, but it's real. Hagaromo really is better than other chalk, and people really do have stashes. Not even a contest.

This may correlate with something I also believe, which is that the ability to generate original ideas is shockingly underrated to the point that people don’t recognize them even when confronted head on. (4/4)
