Why are big companies who use open source software not taxed for using the software? A small tax on profits (even a fraction of a percent) could fed to the developers to ensure the survival the software. Since many companies use OS software and do not pay they should be taxed.

It's against Free Software to add tax. Big companies can donate maintainers and foundations (CNCF, Apache), sponsor conference or give their employers time to work on the product. Tax is not necessary!

You and your dev friends are being used and manipulated in a classic robber-baron race to the bottom. Look at Heartbleed example...no one gave a shit that that important FOSS code was updated, audited, and corrected until Heartbleed struck. FOSS does not necessarily = democratic

I concur but we have foundations like Apache, CNCF or LinuxFoundation to keep an eye on code and collect money and resources to keep project live. If project is abandoned but everybody relies on it then there should be someone who cares. If nobody care nothing will help

Here's the thing. Nobody cares and nothing will help. Large companies have embraced FOSS precisely because it saves them $$ hiring devs who can write FOSS, more $$ than they might save by Capitalizing the costs as they used to do. Devs are still just a cost center

You might be able to convince me that public policy ought to encourage FOSS by incentivizing private corp contributions to FOSS projects. Committ your git changes = company saves money Then again, removing funding from my kid's school just so companies can use free software = :(
