I saw Janet Yellen once at JFK. She was carrying her own luggage and eating what looked like a wilted two-day-old grab-and-go salad. We tend to celebrate big, loud personalities but thank goodness we have modest public servants who eat shitty salads at JFK and just do their jobs.

Without groundhogs on the National Mall, our rangers use other methods to predict the weather. If the Washington Monument is wet, it's raining. If you can't see it, that indicates thick fog. If you can see the Monument's shadow, you're probably too late for daily tickets.

On same day that McCarthy fails to win speakership on party-line vote, PA lawmakers elect Dem Speaker (who says he’ll ‘govern’ as an indie) w/ more than dozen GOP votes. And, in OH, Dem minority gives enough votes to GOP speaker who says he’ll work with D’s on new maps.

Only in Ukraine. You come the Kyiv opera on Xmas, and spend 1,5 hour in its basement because of air alert. But as soon as Russian bombers land in Belarus without launching missiles, the theater is full, and the Barber of Seville is on stage, from the beginning to the end ❤.

Today as then, Jesus comes into a world that does not welcome him (cf. Jn 1:11), that rather rejects or ignores him, as we do so often with foreigners and with the poor. Let's not forget the refugees, the marginalized, people who are alone, orphans and the elderly, prisoners.
