This is just it: 1.) This is a clear proxy issue, a thing-adjacent fight 2.) Folks seem to think that many people are emotionally tied to the memories of Woodrow “I was a godawful president” Wilson and Robert Byrd then they actually are.https://twitter.com/swin24/status/1271460862591750151 …

when confederate statues enter as a proxy fight during a larger policy struggle or news cycle, supporters of keeping them around always say things like, WELL what about the Ivy League building named after the LIBERAL Woodrow Wilson, and it’s like fine, change it...

I would argue that the entire purported “cancel culture” debate some are having is also “thing-adjacent.”

We didn’t get here because Tom Cotton wrote an op-ed. We got here because a police officer slowly smothered a man to death while he cried out for his mother and called that officer “sir.” Turning this into a “debate” about the New York Times or “wokeness” is repulsive.

Woodrow Wilson is the best rebuttal to anyone who thinks Trump is "the worst president ever".

You can't have this conversation without mentioning Andrew Johnson. Well, maybe James Buchanan, but mostly Andrew Johnson.

In addition to the obvious other reasons, a stray guess is this is a function of like U.S. history textbooks' absurd fondness for the Tragic Lost Dream of the League of Nations, as though the mere existence of the UN could've prevented fascism and Stalin

That fondness is shared by history textbooks in other countries too, in my experience

It's not fair. Only the Left is allowed to bring up the past and use guilt by association.

The easier way to deal with these arguments is that FDR, Jefferson, or even Wilson are known for significant accomplishments separate from their racist acts. The Confederates are know primarily for treason in aid of extending slavery into the territories.

The only people emotionally tied to statues of Robert Byrd are conservatives who think their existence is some kind of “gotcha” with which they can “own the libs” and justify their own continued veneration of racists past and present.
