There actually a Crisis Intervention Training model out of U of Memphis which is being taught around the country that deals with these very issues.

Will this training undo all the other training police receive? Police have a very short list of responses to someone who doesn't follow their orders, all of which involve use of force.

I'm surprised it's that low. I had to call the police to help an elderly black woman on Sunday who said she was trying to get to church but was miles away. When I called the dispatcher I made a point to say she was black and they sent a black officer to help her.

It got me thinking about the need for an emergency service for mental health that would send personnel trained to deal w/ such situations. As I was standing there making conversation w/ her, I was wondering what on earth I would have done had he been a young, black man in crisis.
