Here's what I've learned about movies and the pandemic. I've learned that I absolutely do not want to watch a majority of movies at home on my TV. That while I will choose the movies to watch on TV, the experience of a movie in a theater is sacred
to me, and that if there is a movie I absolutely want to watch, I will make that effort. However, the same could not be true for movies released on VOD. While I appreciate the convenience of it, it's very likely I will not want to watch even a prestige movie at home
over the theater experience. Theaters are a deliberate choice, made mostly for a communal experience in such a way that they can only be appreciated by booming audio, a central screen, and audience participation. I'm absolutely certain that while the nature of how we'll watch
will change; even WHAT we watch will change - the concept of going to a movie theater filled with strangers all feeling the same emotions, frustrations, excitement, and overall beauty of the cinema - will not die.
Anywhere else, or in any other form, and it becomes a watered-down version of itself, no matter how indisputably great it is performed, written, directed, or otherwise. This is why I have hope for movies in the future. Because I yearn for it, and I know that I'm not alone.
