if the first protagonist died and the next one is the offspring
I know this exists already, but just for the shit of it, how would you feel about a movie that shifts it’s protagonist midway through the story? What would make that shift okay, less jarring, or like it’s intentional and has purpose?

I think they have to be there from the beginning, and it's really satisfying if it was about them all along. That initial enthusiasm for the one hogging the screen, that deteriorates as they make bad decisions. The sidekick that eventually has to put them down.

You would have to make the new protagonist someone we already know well. If it becomes some rando or a person we met once or 2x them we have no emotional connection. Plus we need to really love Protag1 for that gut punch.

I'm thinking of Bryan Cranston in Godzilla, and it feeling like the production being cheap. I didn't care about his son once he took over because all the set up had led me to care about Cranston's more interesting character.
