So we can just retire that old, "If such and such does(n't) happen, it could mean the end of the world" trope, right? Have writers not figured out that threatening to destroy the planet with which we live on in fiction is not a high-stakes story device?
Basically, by threatening that the Earth will be destroyed all but guarantees that the Earth will, in fact, not be destroyed and that the protagonist who's trying to prevent that from happening will invariably win. It's lazy, rarely successful, and makes for a boring conclusion.

Also, as the Earth is actually dying, the threat of aliens or some supervillain's plot is nonsensical in this day and age, as we've learned that if presented with the choice of turning things around for life on Earth, we would be apathetic to our own demise, at best.
