Deflection is one of the number one tools someone uses when lying. When you deflect back, it's simply because you're lashing out about being cornered. If Brett Kavanaugh has never "passed out" from drinking too much beer, then it seems simple enough to calmly state that.

All I'm saying is that an innocent person would not throw it back at another's face on whether they did the thing they're being asked. They would simply state yes or no. I assume Kavanaugh is worried that if he told the truth, it'd be used against him later.

Which is somewhat fair, but an incorrect assessment. Rep: "Have you ever passed out from drinking too much?" BK: "Much like many of us have here, I have probably had one too many drinks which could have given me a lapse of time, yes." ^ Probably would've been better than "No."

Tip-toeing around common elements of human nature is not what's on trial here. What's on trial is whether or not you had the instinct or maliciousness in behavior to grind on a young woman while intoxicated. What we're trying to establish here is your relationship w/ alcohol.

This is why it's hard to take Brett Kavanaugh's testimony seriously, because he refuses to take the questions seriously. He may not want to implicate himself, sure, but what he IS doing, is giving cause for concern for his ability to tell the truth. Which is why it rings untrue.
