Sadly, you are indeed wrong. Coming off a hit helps, but filmmakers aren’t then granted a green light for their next dream. Lucas made Universal a ton of money on AMERICAN GRAFFITI but they passed on STAR WARS. Spielberg was coming off multiple hits, but Columbia passed on E.T. https://twitter.com/krIshNDIA/status/1034177808547889154 …

I thought Spielberg mentioned that they passed on E.T. because he was notorious for going over budget and taking too long to shoot his films? Either way, you're right, and it seems it's always a struggle in the industry, regardless. Still love it though, for all it's worth.

Spielberg claims he was unhireable after 1941 except to Lucas, which is one of the reasons he's so loyal to him.

Also of note, Raiders of the Lost Ark came in ahead of schedule and under budget

Ah! That's actually what I was referring to. I was mistaken on the film, but correct with the struggle. Apparently, RotLA was his sort of "make it up" film, which is still inspiring, but upsetting that E.T. was turned down initially.https://www.rollingstone.com/tv/tv-news/10-things-we-learned-from-hbos-spielberg-documentary-195376/ …
