    For those that dig the 5 Practices, how have you structured your lessons? I'm thinking: Launch task one day, when kids get to the point of solving it, post on then the next day begin by selecting/sequence/connect student work

    Ok, my other question is what learning/understanding does does a tape diagrams provide that an open number line doesn’t? My students are a lot more comfortable with number lines... probably because I model number talks on them everyday

    From curriculum, “the focus is often on computational strategies with bare numbers (i.e., no context) so that total attention is given to understanding the value of each digit within a number, as well as why the algorithm works.” There’s a better way.

    Does anybody else have a difficult time in primary grades with kids using tape diagrams? It seems to be a pretty unfriendly tool/representation for my kids. Maybe I’m messing it up?

    So you’re saying mental math is a tool? Get those churning to develop your own set of tools! Check out all the SMP’s achieved by using number talks or “mental math”

    Just sitting here absolutely in awe of my new student teacher doing her first number talk with our second graders. She has paid attention and studied Making Numbee Talks Matter like I asked her. I am beyond impressed.

    “Efficiency is having a repertoire of strategies to choose from that keep the Ss from getting bogged down in procedures.” My Ss helped me define efficiency in 3 ways Your strategy makes sense to YOU. It works every time. It’s the fastest strategy you know.

    Finally have a minute to read ’s Math Running Records “Efficiency is built through strategy.” Efficiency is a pillar of fluency. Just thinking about the struggle in helping Ts help students build true fluency. Strategies haven’t been the focus.
