It's only just occurred to me that the %>% shortcut in (Ctrl-Shift-M) is probably a reference to the Magrittr package. HOW have I only just realised this?! 😂

tip of the day: If you want to produce a dashboard in R, you may not need the full power of shiny. The flexdashboard package allows you to create nice looking HTML dashboards using simple RMarkdown syntax. You can add interactivity with htmlwidgets.

tip of the day: Written a function in R? Show potential users of your function (or your future self) some love and add some documentation for it in RStudio by going to Code menu>Insert Roxygen Skeleton.

tip of the day: When using drake with many targets, you can modify your dependency graph by only showing the direct inputs when hovering over a target: vis_drake_graph(config) %>% visNetwork::visOptions(highlightNearest=list(enabled=T, hover=T))

Made a hex for the user group, featuring some iconic Portsmouth landmarks (and obvs ) and different shades of blue! Can’t wait to get some stickers made now! 😍

Idea: should usethis package have an option for creating a drake project, which includes R/packages.R, R/functions.R, and R/plan.R files, as well as a top level make.R and a .gitignore with .drake included?

After an initial hiccup and some help from I'm finally reaping some rewards from his drake package. I've now cached some computationally expensive objects and can focus on iterating the (relatively) small stuff! I also love the dependency vis.

tip of the day: use 'git add -p' to interactively add changes to the staging area. This is great for choosing changes (e.g. within a single file) so that you can make your commits cleaner and more distinct.

Don't let your perceived lack of knowledge on (or anything else) stop you from being a mentor. The most valuable thing you can offer is your time to listen to and resolve someone's question. You then get to teach them how to find your own answers. No one's a🦄

My speaker has effectively been a doorstop for the last 2 years, due to their refusal to do anything about the software which doesn't work, so nothing has really changed with them officially ending support.

tip of the day: use purrr::set_names() to rename your dataframe fields using a vector of names. You can alternatively supply a function name to use it as an alternative to dplyr::rename_all.

peeps: is it possible to RGB plot a stars proxy object using something like a stretch parameter to increase contrast? I couldn't see anything about it in the help/vignettes.

Found this job posting. It's insane, they don't seem to know what they want, apart from everything.

I've just started learning OOP in using S3. It seems to be a case of taking an existing data structure (e.g. list, df) for storing properties, assigning it a new class, and then writing some method dispatchers. I can't help but feel I'm missing something.

I've just imagined what it would be like if hex sticker fridge magnets existed, and now I want them all.

Recently added to my curated list of books is "The Turing Way - a how to guide for reproducible data science". It goes into lots of detail on the entire spectrum of reproducibility.

OK, that didn't work, and it's taken a while to figure out how to do it. For anyone struggling, all you have to do is use the := operator, e.g. mutate(df, {{col}} := fun({{col}}))
