      1. Again, this gets things upside down. As long as there are enough swing voters in purple or soft red districts, the kind of polarization we have in House districts makes triangulation more sensible politically, not less.https://twitter.com/HeerJeet/status/1152252330345193472 …

The assumption here is that swing voters will respond more to triangulation than they will to pursuing a robust Democratic agenda. I think there's a good argument against that as @EricLevitz pursues here in detail:http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/07/moderate-house-democrats-the-squad-trump-racism-media-aoc-pelosi.html …

Well, that may be true. But Pelosi obviously thinks differently. And I’m not sure why I would trust Eric’s political judgment over hers.

Sure, but by that logic, we should all give up punditry! More seriously, it's quite possible that Pelosi's formation in the politics of Clinton-Bush-Obama era doesn't quite prepare her for what is needed against someone like Trump.

I guess what I’m missing is the evidence that Pelosi’s strategy is failing. Dems win back the House in 2018, thanks largely to moderates emphasizing issues, not impeachment. The House passes a bunch of liberal, if not left, bills. Trump is floundering. What’s she doing wrong?

Dems were expected to win 2018 and they arguably underperformed at the state level. But I think the strongest argument for Pelosi failing is the fact that she’s not really impeding Trump. Now is the time for complete opposition and she caved on concentration camps.

I have to revisit this because not only is Pelosi failing to provide a meaningful check against Trump's worse impulse, she's actively working to tamp down left-wing energy which is responsible for making policies like Medicare-for-all and $15 min wage popular and mainstream.

The House literally just passed the $15-an-hour minimum wage. And Medicare for All isn't anywhere close to being mainstream or popular.

$15 minimum wage by 2025 seven months into a two-year term. Beyond that and HR1, Pelosi has spent a lot of time of symbolic rebukes of Trump while exacting next to nothing from him. As for M4a, most of the 2020 Dem field and polling would seem to disagree with your assessment.

The $15/hour the House passed is “by 2025,” and it’s already obsolete as a living wage in 2019. Somehow it didn’t take six years to implement a $1 trillion+ tax cut for the wealthy. And M4A not only has majority public support, but is favored by 52% of Republicans.
