For me, I think part of the issue is that people embraced the positives of the internet without properly thinking through the bad stuff that was also possible...

That's definitely true - and has come home to roost in multiple ways over the last year or two. But there's also something about what's going on with gender roles. A lot of this is bound up with young men's very unhealthy expectations about what they're 'entitled' to.

I wonder if some of this is just another example of extremism though - and the sheer numbers are because they've egged each other on, not that they actually started off with those views.

But it's extremism rooted in some of the broader, unhealthy ways that we socialise young men.
