2/ I find myself disagreeing with a lot of the HODLer reactions. This includes people I typically see eye-to-eye with based on their strong writing/thinking/analysis of Bitcoin (e.g. @bendavenport @real_vijay @moneyball). No one is saying HODLers don't create value by HODLing.

3/ The "free-rider problem" is a term from economics describing the situation where "those who benefit from resources, public goods, or services do not pay for them, which results in an underprovision of those goods or services" (Wikipedia)

Appreciate your points, David and don't want to get into a semantic battle but I do think HODLers are paying by way of risking their capital and that by doing so they make the project significant enough that developers care enough to want to work on it.

I also think the caliber of developer who is attracted to work on something because of its global significance is going to be higher than a developer that is simply attracted by a quick and direct payoff.

The developers are both HODLers + writing code. In that sense, someone who merely HODLs is, by definition, doing less. Why is that so hard to see? (HODL + code) > HODL. It’s literally math.

So you equate "doing less" as "economically free-riding"?

Relatively speaking, yes. But I wouldn’t use those words again given how they seem to trigger people who aren’t used to economics jargon.

Would you consider late stage / pure check writing VC’s as free risers in founders’ businesses?

Nope. The investors’ money goes directly to pay the founders and employees, who are compensated for their time. They aren’t expected to work for free.

This whole thread is a slight to the countless devs who work on bitcoin for free or are otherwise self-incentivized. How does this model account for their behavior? Are they just principled? Perhaps there is an allure to working on a project with no leader
