If he is called upon to give evidence he might well be required to tell ALL, under oath, about phone-hacking at The Mirror while he was editor. But given his track record on things like share dealing/Viglen, can he be relied upon to tell the truth?

Why is this relevant 20 years on? Because Prince Harry has brought a legal action against The Mirror for phone-hacking - while was its editor. So it would be understandable if his bowels were beginning to twitch again.

Under considerable pressure from Trinity Mirror (now Reach plc), Morgan sold all his shares in Viglen and gave the profit (some £18k) to a few charities including the Canine Defence League (now ). But the cheques got lost in the post.

The day after he bought the shares, Viglen’s share price soared. It was reported soon after that the London Stock Exchange was investigating suspicious trades in Viglen, which told DTI inspectors caused his bowels to “twitch”.

He was intent on keeping his PEP purchases secret, telling DTI inspectors (during an interview under caution), that he was “sensitive” and “paranoid” about it because if this info leaked out it would be “on the front page of the Sunday Times in about three microseconds.”

But his investment was rather larger. In fact, he loaded up his personal equity plan (PEP), his wife’s PEP and then plundered his bank account, leaving him with almost £67,000 worth of Viglen shares.

Proof that Piers Morgan’s relationship with the truth is sometimes tenuous. 20 years ago today the Daily Telegraph ran an article where he admits to buying “about £20,000 worth” of Viglen shares the day before the company was tipped in the paper he edited.

Just heard about Terry J It feels strange that a man of so many talents and such endless enthusiasm, should have faded so gently away... Of his many achievements, for me the greatest gift he gave us all was his direction of 'Life of Brian'. Perfection Two down, four to go

What did you order? £350 million-a-week for the NHS; loads of superior trade deals; all the benefits of EU membership with none of the responsibilities; two unicorns & a shiny blue passport. What did you get? Um. A border in the Irish Sea & a £500,000 crowdfunder for some bongs.
