  3. Continued supply to this subsurface storage region can cause stress to accumulate within the volcanic cone and may promote new instability of the west flank. More work is needed to fully characterise the slope stability. 6/7

  4. Our research shows that the deformation of the west flank is caused by shallow, temporary storage directly beneath the west flank; this magma eventually supplies eruptive activity 🌋 5/7

  5. We observed this deformation using with Sentinel-1 and CSK, and set out to identify the cause. Weak, clastic infill material of the new west flank, above a ~central deformation source, can not explain the asymmetric deformation. 🛰💻 4/7

  6. Volcanic activity has since rebuilt a steep sided 5023 m high cone, but the new west flank, above the site of the 3000 year old collapse, has shown repeated periods of rapid deformation. The most recent, in Nov 2015, had max uplift rates of ~48 cm/yr over a 3 wk period! 3/7

  7. Tungurahua has been frequently active since 1999, and initially led to the evacuation of 25,000 people from nearby communities. An eruption ~3000 years ago caused the partial collapse of the west flank and lead to a far-reaching debris avalanche that covered 80 km^2. 2/7

It is possible that the worst of the eruption has happened. But it's also possible that the eruption will get more explosive, and this volcano's deadly history shows us what that may look like. My latest, for .
