    Starting now, Metro plans to gradually return nearly half of the 7000-series railcars to passenger service. Metro will then pause for 90 days until all aspects of the new inspection cycles are fully established and any needed adjustments are made under WMSC oversight.

    This is a great step from Microsoft for right to repair, , although the lack of consumer availability of parts will probably ruffle some feathers. Hopefully it will push other companies to start similar programs.

    Microsoft has partnered with iFixit to start selling official Surface repair tools to service partners. Microsoft reached out to iFixit to improve Surface repairability, after iFixit's low 1/10 scores. Details:

    This seems like a nice way of saying they haven't finished drafting a plan to WMSC yet but want to subtly throw them under the bus (train?).

    The proposed plan will include more frequent wheelset inspections which must be reviewed and accepted by the WMSC before the 7ks can return to service. We hope to know more about the timing of their return soon, but all steps in the process must be satisfied to move forward.

    Also, they will eventually have to publicly admit this in some form. I'm not sure how you could put a positive spin on this from a PR perspective, short of firing GM Wiedefeld or the Chief Safety Officer (or a new safety program?)

    Great deductive reasoning by . This must be true, and is a devastating conclusion. How can WMATA expect to convince riders to come back to the system--both in restoring trust after the derailment and in the longer term--without trust their OWN safety inspections?

    With WMSC approval, Metro will now move ahead to testing. They’ve said it will take 12 days at least.

    Following additional revisions by WMATA, the WMSC has reviewed and has communicated to WMATA that there are no technical objections to the revised test plan for a road test of two 7000 Series trains in simulated service. The WMSC will closely monitor the testing activities.

    Couldn't someone just, like, pay a couple people $200 each to count the number of people and fare evaders at 3 random stations for a day and check this? Seems like a very cheap Metro research project--perfect for an undergrad thesis or something.

    Now an update on service and the 7000-series issues: - Metro aims to get from 31 trains daily to 50 trains daily. Working to bring more trains back but will take time. - Service will remain the same through mid-November 15-20 mins on the Red Line 30-40 mins on other lines

    A Train Operator, car maintenance mechanic and the Rail Supervisor reported the runaway train over the radio. Metrorail did not stop the recovery process, and did not further investigate this aspect of the event until the WMSC insisted on proper reporting and investigation.
