Alek Minassian was not motivated by misogyny. Misogyny is where he landed, but the root cause was almost certainly a lifetime of being bullied. He has only himself to blame, but let's not act like finding ways to prevent future attacks isn't important. #TorontoAttack #TOpoli

Do you have evidence he was bullied?

I see that none of the anecdotes describe bullying. Was he bullied by male or female classmates?

      Why is that relevant?

If he was bullied by girls, I can see a cause and effect. But if he was bullied by boys and reacted by hating girls, its sounds like misogyny is where he started. Not where he landed.

He was an awkward, socially isolated, bullied kid. It doesn't matter which sex bullied him, although it's a good bet it was both.

It matters because he blamed one gender for his problems. HE made it about misogyny. Why are you trying to ignore it?

I literally said in this tweet that he landed on misogyny. I did the opposite of ignore it. Your problem seems to be me not exclusively talking about hating women. He wrote 31 words on one Facebook post and everyone thinks they have solved the case. I think it is more complex.

You said the root cause was that he was bullied. You have less proof of that than of his misogyny. But for some reason you focus on bullying, rather than his misogyny. Why?

Because I do not believe he would have been involved with incel if he wasn't bullied.

Why not? In the article you quoted, he was shown having awkward interactions with girls even when they were nice to him. The world is full of men who are violent towards women who were the bullies and not the bullied.

Right, so not everything is always going to be consistent. Not sure why this bothers you so much. When people are bullied, they lose their confidence. Add a mental illness and being socially isolated, and the results could be awful. Or it might not be. What's your point?

In the US after the school shooting in Florida, people who didn't want to talk about gun control, tried to make it about bullying. That somehow the kids were responsible and telling kids to reach out and be kinder would stop future shootings.

What you're doing reminds me of that. Instead of focusing on how kids bullied him into becoming a violent misogynist (because there's no proof that it happened) maybe we should be focusing on a society and organizations that encouraged him to actually be violent towards women.

Why can't we walk and chew gum? You seem to think if I talk about bullying I am not thinking about misogyny. That's the issue. I am easily able to think about both issues. Perhaps protecting women from violence can include prevention via anti-bullying concepts.

But that's not what you said. You said "Alek Minassian was not motivated by misogyny." Which besides being a big assumption on your part, immediately suggests you want the focus to shift away from the misogyny. I'm trying to understand why.

You didn't say, "In addition to important work that need to be done to combat misogyny, I'd also like to make sure we pay attention to greater acceptance of neuro-diversity."
