I hereby propose an unit of hubris, "Altman". For most practical applications, nanoaltmans will be more than sufficient
for those who don't know, it's not like plants didn't solve this problem. the warmer it gets, the worse C₃ plants get at carbon fixation, and the more of a competitive advantage C₄ plants get; today, C₄ plants account for ~1/20th of biomass but ~1/5 of carbon fixation
C₄ fixation is extremely advantageous in warmer or drier conditions; so much so that it has independently evolved a staggering 45 (forty five) times. The problem though is that it takes more energy, so if you look back, C₄ plants expand during _falling_ CO₂ levels, not rising
Why all this fiddling with C₃/C₄? Why not just make a better RuBisCO? Well, there probably *isn't* a better RuBisCO. It's possible to alter it to decrease the rate of photorespiration (the major limiting factor), but then it becomes slower.pic.twitter.com/nIu3fGttSz
So what happens? If you can't change RuBisCO, change the environment around RuBisCO! That's exactly what C₄ plants do as an adaptation to low CO₂ levels in relation to O₂ levels:pic.twitter.com/OBctG9cdiZ
CO2 levels are near the lower limit beyond with plants cannot adapt. Should CO2 fall significantly, everything dies, if it rises a bit, Hawaii comes to San Francisco
