How does "parenting doesn't matter" data square with "fatherless homes predict strongly for negative life outcomes" data?

This is what I assumed, except "parenting in the normal range" is a big qualifier to the "parenting doesn't matter" claim; it kind of refutes it.

A lot of things seem to work like that. Diet and exercise are two good examples. I imagine its just a case of sensible people refusing to believe that most are not sensible.

Or perhaps it is more about definitions. People who make such claims do not consider child abuse ("bad parenting") in it's many forms to be parenting, therefore parenting doesn't matter.
