Things are still settling in my head about it, and I'd recommend this game so I don't want to spoil all its revelations and reorientations, because they're joys of discovery. But!

What I will say is that in its oblique, understated way, it's an intensely political and philosophical work, which is insightful about climate change, how we connect with each other in the internet age (something heightened by Covid of course), capitalism, nationhood...

...ropes and knots and bonds, how the dead live on in the memories of the living... and so much else! It's thick as tar with all its themes, but they overlap and intertwine invigoratingly. And it's just a lot of fun to play, too!

Ofc it's unbalanced and spiky, and I get why people might not be willing to overlook Kojima's weird tendency to exposition-drop or juxtapose tonality or be low-key creepy around women (though there's no Quiet in this game). But mostly I love its wild-eyed-ness.

Anyway, wondering if there're any interesting responses going around to this game? I'm going to @ in
@carolynmichelle here with apologies because I was reminded of her piece about divergence in reviews (https://medium.com/@carolynpetit/ruthless-individuality-criticisms-past-and-hopefully-its-future-d1ffbf3bb2c8 …) -Show this thread -
- she argued there that critical divergence is a good thing in reviewing, and I agree, but I would add to it that *the reason why* (or one reason why) reviews should differ is that the material under review should be individual/strange enough to merit this breadth of encounter.

I mean: Outer Worlds, which Petit mentions, is such a controlled, sterilised work that there's kind of only thing it is, and so if someone thinks it's good, they're wrong. But Death Stranding gives you a cornucopia of ideas, and so it could be different to everyone.

And this, if anything, is why it's Art. It feels like it's the work of a single artist who is trying to make something bigger and deeper than any single artist could be by just offering up its audience connections and maps - and hoping we can each and all make something of it.

Also,

Also ating with apologies
@transgamerthink for any recs for responses she's come across even though I don't know her from Eve cos I love her review of it (https://kotaku.com/death-stranding-the-kotaku-review-1839474313 …) and how bewildered and charmed it is - my response exactly!Show this thread
