Standard decision theory is VERY well understood & accepted by academics. Yet most orgs find many excuses to avoid using it for top decisions. They'd better achieve ends (including $) if they did, but execs win political battles via more flexible methods.

If you think that all we need to do is build nuclear, you’re wrong. If you think all we need to do is build renewables, you’re wrong. If you think all we need to do is plant trees, you’re wrong. If you describe any one thing as “the solution” to climate change, you’re wrong.

Důležitá věc, o které se už pár měsíců dost mluví. Nejhorší z klimatických scénářů už není nejhorší. Během minulé dekády se totiž podařilo natolik přibrzdit růst emisí, že se mu asi už najisto vyhneme.

Makes sense: "Because participating in politics is not an effective way to do good, Freiman argues that we actually have a moral duty to disengage from politics and instead take direct action to make the world a better place."

Animated diagram of the Earth's Carbon Cycle and how it has changed over time. Carbon, in various forms including CO2 and organic materials, is continually exchanged between the atmosphere, oceans, and biosphere. However, human activities have perturbed the carbon cycle.

A 52-year-old Navy SEAL was accepted to Yale and expected to find “snowflakes” and “safe spaces.” Instead he found it was the people who mock college students who are sheltered, brittle, and close-minded. Worth a read, and consistent with my experience.

"The not-real-socialism defence is only ever invoked retrospectively, namely, when a socialist experiment has already been widely discredited. As long as a socialist experiment is in its prime, almost nobody disputes its socialist credentials."

I was once a believer in Open Source. I wanted digital anarchy, followed by first digital and then physical cornucopia. This essay seems a crushing reality check on what actually happened. Interested in what software engineer friends think.

    1) In 2008 a salmon (yes the fish) was put through an MRI scanner. The salmon was shown a series of photographs of humans in social situations, and asked to determine the emotion of the person in the photo (yes, really).

It's important to be positive about the future. Not as wishful thinking. Not as blind optimism. But as actual constructive bets and contributions to the good that exists, and it certainly exists.

Imagine Kant, Spinoza, Locke, Hilbert and Wittgenstein would have been forced to present at TED conferences to gain mind share and funding. The relationship between philosophy and culture would have been such a shit show. Like it is now.
