He still has freedom of speech, but in this particular instance, when he used his free speech to criticize president Trump, he was punished for it. Free speech isn't free if it incurs punishment.

I think you answered your own question. The fact that he criticized the pres is what is causing the pres to lash out at him, but that’s not what the pres is supposed to be using his position for. It’s supposed to be about the country, not the president’s personal grievances.
