NYC has fined incarcerated people >$1 million since 2015. "DOC’s role as police, prosecutor, judge and beneficiary of these alleged infractions is a huge conflict of interest,” said . “Every time the DOC writes a ticket, they make money."

In the last 4 years, Colorado has taken away 1.2 million licenses. "Increasingly, legislators see this system as counterproductive...because it can cost a lot of money to buy back the right to drive by settling debts, which tend to pile up on poor people."

It's time to stop punishing poverty. Most U.S. states take away someone's driver's license just because they can't afford to pay the fines & fees for a minor violation. Learn more by checking out our Florida campaign's new interactive Story Maps:

Yes yes yes finally! The carceral systems are killing us, literally! So excited to see some of my heros putting the pen to paper to elevate the role of the carceral system to our declining health.

Props to the editorial board for endorsing Maryland legislation that would stop suspending driver's licenses when someone can't afford to pay a traffic fine. This would be a significant step toward scaling back the criminalization of poverty.

It’s time to stop taking away people’s driver's licenses just because they don’t have money. We're leading a campaign in Florida—where 2 million people have a suspended license—to end this cruel and counterproductive practice. Check out our new Story Maps:

In NY, driving on a suspended license is the 4th-most charged crime. Taking away people's licenses for "driving while broke" forces them to make an impossible choice: stop driving—and lose access to work & basic necessities—or keep driving and risk criminal charges + more fines.

New Yorkers: You may have seen me tweeting about driver's license suspension for unpaid fines in Florida, but this is a NY problem, too. Millions of New Yorkers could be freed from a cycle of poverty & punishment if our legislation passes this session.

Good news from Illinois, where 55,000 people will get their driver's licenses back under a new law ending license suspensions for unpaid tickets for many non-moving violations. This is a significant step toward stopping the cycle of poverty and punishment.

1/ I’m happy to report that Illinois will stop suspending driver’s licenses over unpaid parking tickets. Some 55,000 people will get their licenses reinstated. Among them: a man named Stephen Carpenter. Let me tell you about him.
