Here's my own assessment of the ESA from a few years back: http://www.aei.org/publication/the-leaky-ark/ … I even edited a book about it: https://www.aei.org/publication/rebuilding-the-ark/ …

And for a discussion of the (mis)use of science in species conservation, you can check out this piece: https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.1086/695562?journalCode=scer … (excerpt here: https://www.perc.org/2018/07/13/the-science-charade/ … )

And here's an extensive discussion of why the ESA's regulation of private land use under Section 9 is bad for conservation. https://lawdigitalcommons.bc.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=2381&context=bclr …

Given that endangered listing does not appear (and may harm) conservation on private land, relaxing regs for species listed as "threatened" could actually help with conservation.

Bottom-line: The details of ESA regulatory reforms announced today matter. Some changes better/worse than others. But don't reflexively assume changing - or even "weakening" - existing regs is bad for conservation. ESA itself has not been so great for species.

Right. The Trump administration's goal is to strengthen conservation with these steps. You don't seriously believe that.

Good policy does not require good intentions. US embrace CFC phaseout driven by economic concerns, but was also sound environmental policy. Punitive aspects of ESA are not good for conservation.

Eagles were saved by banning of DDT ad Eagle Protection Act, both adopted before the ESA. Few of the official recoveries are due to ESA, and law has hampered conservation for other species. You can learn more about its bad record here: https://www.aei.org/publication/rebuilding-the-ark/ …
