New "plagiarism" charges against @FareedZakaria are silly. CNN voice-overs that use facts from the Economist & NYTimes without footnotes.

Hey Jacob, is Fareed Zakaria plagiarizing in a Slate column "silly" to you? https://ourbadmedia.wordpress.com/2014/09/24/yes-the-indefensible-fareed-zakaria-also-plagiarized-in-his-fancy-liquor-columns-for-slate/ … @jacobwe @fareedzakaria

@blippoblappo You take a source he CITES, then point to info that comes from that source, differently phrased. Not remotely plagiarism.

@jacobwe @blippoblappo The info comes 300 words later in the story in a separate paragraph, bit of a stretch to call that a proper citation.

@garonsen @blippoblappo @jacobwe & a paraphrase should be summation even w/ cite, not switching two words out for synonyms.

@jacobwe @blippoblappo sooo is there a quota of plagiarism evidence you'll have to see before you stop w the blatantly self-serving apologia

@tabbouleh_rasa @delong I don't think this rises to the level of plagiarism, but it ought to give pause that the guy is so very unoriginal

@dsquareddigest @delong that kind of academic dishonesty would fail you out of undergrad. why does he get to keep his career as a pundit?

.@tabbouleh_rasa reporters have a very different idea of the duty U owe to ur sources—that is, none—than academics do… @dsquareddigest

@delong Given that this is a norm in that profession, why the piling on Fareed, who actually does much more citing than his peers?

@masoudtarek @delong Ah yes, the old "but mom, everybody else is doing it" argument.

@zacechola @delong No. But, until recently, the practices for which Zakaria is being skewered were SOP in journalism: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/edward-wasserman/plagiarism_b_1894478.html …

@masoudtarek @delong I don't think the integrity standard ever changed. What changed is it's easier to get caught now.

@jacobwe @blippoblappo differently phrased is called "paraphrasing" and also requires citation

@jacobwe @blippoblappo Really REALLY surprised to see you say this. YOu cannot be arguing citing is permission to steal phrases and wording.

@jacobwe @blippoblappo let's suppose for argument's sake that it isn't Real Plagiarism. Did Zakaria contribute any original thought?
