Teachers, fire & police shouldn't have right to strike. It's blackmail power over essential services. They have many other protections

@jacobwe Spoken like someone who has really gone way to long since having to hold a real job.

@jacobwe Right to strike is most important negotiating tool in a collective bargaining agreement. No right to strike, no point of a union.

.@jacobwe Either you mistakenly think the days won't be made up or you are really upset about the loss of free childcare. Which is it?

@ceolaf @jacobwe Chicago school district spends nearly $5 billion a year. In what sense are you using the word "free"?

@StuartBuck1 @jacobwe On the margin. On the individual level, in the immediate future, this childcare has no marginal cost to families.

@ceolaf @jacobwe Even assuming that school is childcare, it's childcare for which people have already paid. A strike means paying double.

@StuartBuck1 @jacobwe Yes. And much of the outrage over teacher strikes stems from that. But it doesn't make teachers "essential workers."

@jacobwe A strike by teachers -- like a strike by sanitation or DMV workers -- is inconvenient. But the work can/will be made up.

@jacobwe Methinks you misunderstand "essential services." Not being public safety officers, their striking's not a threat to public safety.

@jacobwe if teaching is an essential service, then pay teachers fairly for their work. CPS wants to extend school day? that means pay raise!

@jacobwe What's your alternative to address worker issues in those jobs, then?

    10. Portentous History ‏@HistoryChanell 10 Sep 2012

@jacobwe Striking service workers, AFAIK, aren't threatening to release incriminating information, so I'm not sure "blackmail" is accurate.

@jacobwe so...what are you gonna do? force them to work at gunpoint?
