PREY is the first movie in literally years where I’ve managed to avoid all trailers and spoilers, so it makes perfect sense that someone just casually dropped details into my feed without a care in the world.

Reading CARY GRANT: A BRILLIANT DISGUISE by Scott Eyman and it’s riveting. What is a movie star if not an ordinary person whose greatest role is a person who demands your attention above all else?

BULLET TRAIN features a great Brad Pitt performance, one good action scene, and post-Tarantino/Ritchie banter comedy so awful that it derails the movie every time the plot pauses to let characters endlessly riff. Would be pretty good if it wasn’t frequently unbearable.

I’ve been writing about the movie industry for a living for 13 years and I’ve never seen a story like BATGIRL getting shelved. Feels short-sighted as a business decision and poisonous as a creative one.

100 episodes of . The little quarantine project that could. Thanks to everyone who listens.

We celebrate 100 (!) episodes with a whopper of an episode. On #StarTrekTNG, we shed the "Skin of Evil," while #DoctorWho gets brighter than sunflowers with the all-timer "Vincent and the Doctor." Listen here! trekkingthroughtimeandspace.libsyn.com/episode-100-sk

A long-running argument in my marriage is over whether or not the Burrito Loading Zone at Chipotle should be respected if you’re getting a non-online to-go order. We’ve had genuine debates over this.

It brings me no pleasure to say this is true.

My favorite tortoise Instagram feed has been hijacked by the tortoise owner’s dog, and lady, I follow enough dog instagrams. Focus on the giant land turtle, please.

Apropos of nothing: PREDATOR is a really great movie, maybe even a masterpiece. I like it more with every passing year. I especially admire its patience.

My wife watched the first episode of THE REHEARSAL with me and it made her skin crawl to such a degree that she has sworn off the rest of the series. (I will happily watch the rest of it solo.)

One of my favorite things is that very specific flavor of glossy ‘90s creature feature. MIMIC and THE RELIC come to mind. Please share yours below, thank you very much.

Season 2 of CURSED FILMS using a fictional character as a talking head without explaining it really puts a bad taste in my mouth about a show I otherwise find incredibly valuable.

If you want to see a movie that feels like EVIL DEAD made by less-talented but undeniably inspired weirdos, THE CONVENT is streaming on Shudder right now.

My biggest professional regret is the time I interviewed Anthony Bourdain and was under strict orders on the angle of the article and I could feel his withering disdain through the whole thing.

1. Please don’t write critical takedowns about a movie that has only released a single trailer and therefore you haven’t seen. 2. Please don’t rope queer folks into your takedown. We’re not a monolith, and your take is bad.

Also still negative (and with no symptoms), and also know a few folks who got it. I will say that all the commentary on SDCC being a super spreader event is largely unfounded, and devalues the strict precautions the convention took to keep attendees safe.

So far I'm testing negative too - fingers crossed it remains that way. I do know several people who got it there but not nearly as many as I thought might. The convention itself was really good about masking. I'd bet most of the spread of it came from the parties and offsites. twitter.com/Jody_Houser/st…

Couldn’t help but notice that the shouting about FOR ALL MANKIND jumping the shark this season directly coincided with the episode focused on the various queer characters. But, you know, surely a coincidence. Surely.

This is the kind of redesign they’ll teach folks to avoid in college courses.

While we're discussing terrible platform decisions, let's look at IMDb's proposed redesign. Here's John Logan's filmography, current (left) and proposed (right).

Twitter, I need you resolve an important argument. Does Snoopy, as written and drawn by the late Charles Schultz, resemble the physical appearance and behavior of an actual Beagle?

Issue one of the new comic ROGUES’ GALLERY. Not sure if that’s intended to be a /Film joke or if I’m overthinking it.

BETTER CALL SAUL never fails to give me exactly what I didn’t know I needed. This week’s episode was low-key perfect, and far richer than I think some people will give it credit for.

Anyway. NOPE. Good goddamn movie. A-fucking-plus. Son of a bitch has one of the strongest three-for-threes in Hollywood history. Daniel Kaluuya’s taciturn performance is a marvel. Put Keke Palmer in everything. Michael Wincott 4vr, baybeeeee.

I’d put the “rainstorm” sequence in NOPE up against any other horror set piece I’ve seen in the past few years. The amount of terror, comedy, and dialogue-free exposition delivered via images alone is astonishing. Jordan Peele just *gets* cinema. Exhilarating.

I love that Jordan Peele makes movies that are a blast to watch in the moment, but so rich with subtext and loaded imagery that they can inspire a dozen different takes as you ruminate on it. I still haven’t fully unpacked US and I think NOPE is just as rich.

The fact that NOPE made me think about Tremors, Signs, The Simpsons, and Evangelion while not feeling dependent on them says something. And that’s before you unpack its intentionally hazy commentary on societal obsession with tragedy and Hollywood collateral damage.

I’ve heard countless filmmakers talk about trying to capture the feeling of an old Spielberg or Amblin movie. I think NOPE is one of the few movies to actually do that, and it does it with zero nostalgia-baiting. It feels playful and scary in all the right ways.

Really thrilled to see Chip Zdarksy drawing again. One of the best “actors” in the biz. Emotions and body language are so clear that his characters might as well be moving and speaking out loud.

The first issue of PUBLIC DOMAIN is terrific, and the mere concept of the writer behind the current DAREDEVIL and BATMAN runs tackling superhero creator rights in a creator-owned Image comic series is wiiiiiild.

If a movie inspires wildly mixed reactions when it comes out, that means it’s going to continue to be talked about for the rest of your life. One thing you can rely on: complaints that it’s not playing by the rules of conventional movies can be thrown straight in the garbage.
