Next week I’m taking a train from SF to Chicago. It takes 2 days and there’s no wifi and I am SO excited.

I did a 30-day rail pass across the US and Canada when I was younger. Find out when you’ll be stopping at a station for more than a few minutes and get out and look around, there’s often cool stuff (and better food) a short walk from stations
Also the observation cars are by far the best place to hang out (no idea how it compares to private rooms, I’ve never done that). I swear you could fill a book with the conversations and characters you’ll encounter in Amtrak observation cars. A great sampler of weird America
