I was fortunate to get to spend much of the pandemic writing a book about home bartending with one of my best friends, Brett Adams. Soon that book can be yours! "Raising the Bar" is now available for pre-order. More details in today's newsletter:

Story has been updated, presumably after I sent an email. "Steffen said it was not yet known if the vape products were tobacco- or THC-based."

I don't fully disregard the possibility that turf wars are breaking out in California by Puff Barr-packing hoodlums, but the phrasing "illegal sale of vaping products" leads to me believe this will turn out to be THC carts. apnews.com/article/crime-

Was surprised to see these numbers...a whopping 57% of Americans surveyed support banning all tobacco products (not just flavors.) As I note, I'd love to have seen this broken out by product. Do people also support banning vapes at the same level of cigs? statnews.com/2023/02/02/ban

My friends on the left, remember all those reasons you justifiably hate Michael Bloomberg? Don't take his money to push for laws that will get people sent to jail for selling flavored e-cigs.

This is like if someone burned down an entire city but saved an armful of puppies at the last minute, then later decided to distance themselves from the saving puppies thing.

I'm really not one to defend Tucker or his guests, but if anyone is interested in a sober discussion of the relative risks of cigar smoking, I've got a book for you: amazon.com/Rediscovery-To

In short: cigars tend to be smoked less often and inhaled less deeply than cigarettes, resulting in less exposure and lower health risks. Don't take it from me, take it from the National Cancer Institute!

Tucker: There’s clearly no public health crisis imposed by cigar smoking. What is this?!? Guest: *pulls out meat* Red meat. Big fat steaks. That’s what they’re going to be taxing next

Amazing example of how broken the mindset in tobacco control has become: calling it an "enormous win for global public health" to forbid distribution of a COVID vaccine, just because it was partially developed by Philip Morris.

The technocratic expectation that nicotine flavor prohibitions will be obeyed is butting up against the reality of illicit markets and sporadic enforcement. This shouldn't be surprising, and governments shouldn't be interfering with adult choices on this anyway.

Carson, CA has had a flavor ban since 2020. They've done two inspections and issued zero fines since. In 45 minutes I found four shops selling these products. statnews.com/2023/01/27/cal

Another sign we're entering an era of nicotine prohibition: Taiwan bans sale and even personal use of e-cigarettes. (Regular cigarettes? Perfectly fine, because public health institutions have lost their minds on tobacco policy.)

Reynolds is only able to release 'new' cigarettes because of the TCA's substantial equivalence process, which will be never be available to safer products like vaping. Cover the consequences of bad regs? Nah. NYT just covers it as industry vs. TC.
