7 lbs of rice. You think this is fake. It isn’t. This is how they ration food in Cuba. 5 eggs a month. Unless you can buy dinner at a private restaurant where a meal costs the monthly salary of a Doctor.

Communism is cool take 2. You only get one newspaper. (Trump and Bolton all over front page)pic.twitter.com/b8L3Qgct8w

This newspaper was on the anniversary of the Bay of Pigs invasion, where they repelled an American invasion. A handful of years later Castro brought the world to the brink of nuclear war. He made Cuba important. But it’s been downhill since then, especially post Cold War.

Cuba was the first place I’ve ever been that didn’t have newsstands everywhere selling the International Herald Tribune or the FT or even just a selection of local papers. I didn’t even notice until I had left. No press there much less freedom of the press. Narrative is power.

There was also no advertising. Few signs or billboards anywhere. Outdoor signage was rare in general. When you got nothing to sell you got nothing to advertise either. Visually, that was powerful to me. Imagine a world with no ads?

While I was there Trump rescinded the US visas to Cuba. Who knows if others will be able to go after me. Habana has built brand new five star hotels rising amidst the squalor of old town, surrounded by buildings so old and rundown there are trees growing on their roofs. But:

No more gringos are coming to stay in the new hotels. I suspect some of the building projects will be abandoned. It'll be a big loss for the Cuban govt. They take a 10% money change fee plus over charge by 1000x. Now that money'll dry up. So will cab rides, tips, and alms.

Teachers, engineers, and doctors all became tour guides because that's where the money was. But now that the flow of travelers will dry up, it'll most likely be the local people who are hit the hardest. I'm torn on what to do geo politically with Cuba. Will write/record soon.

The Capitol and the Presidential Palace were in tip top shape - recently renovated. There are a handful of luxury sites. Ironically, Cuba will now try to get back to where it was in 1959 - in bed with foreign interests for direct investment, tourism, and recreation. But -

The government will also be doing what Castro revolted over - Taking the wealth for the few at the expense of the many. A sixty year cycle.

Cuba's number one export is medical doctors. They get "free" education but then work as slaves in foreign countries. Yes they get paid abroad but all money goes back to the Cuban government. Is the education really free? Who wins? Shiny Capitols + slums around it = bad look.

One tour guide we had wouldn't say the name "Castro" - he just kept calling the man "him" Imagine living in that kind of terror - where you can't even say a man's name for fear of retribution.

There was a half built nuclear reactor the Soviet's started but never finished. Instead of unlimited power, the Cubans had two hours of electricity per day. You couldn't keep food in the refrigerator. The nuclear power plant shell became a warehouse.

I was head and shoulders taller than everyone, and 100 lbs more than the average man. I was the walking caloric manifestation of abundance, whereas they were the representation of deprivation.

Here's how poor and shitty things are there: One English teach turned tour guide said his next plan was to go to Haiti to get clothes and bring them back to Cuba for resale. Haiti had more stuff than Cuba. HAITI.

The buildings in Old Havana had blue barrels on the roofs. Trucks come around and pump fresh water to the roof and then gravity brings it to the taps inside. I didn't confirm, but this would suggest there is no running fresh water in these properties.

I had to pay to use a bathroom in Cienfuegos. The room was clean but the toilet was broken. The attendant had to come lift the lid and flush the toilet by hand each time. That was her job.

The Cuban government is obsessed with the United States. They deliberately modeled their Capitol Building after the US's and made it just a few meters taller and wider than ours.pic.twitter.com/xhXF2uxIbV

The US closed it's Embassy there in part because the Cubans/Russians? were poisoning staffers w/ radio waves. The Cubans think we closed the Embassy to punish them. They now have to travel to Mexico to apply for a visa. $150 app. fee AKA impossible.https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/01/science/sonic-attack-cuba-microwave.html …
