the tumbler lock puzzle in Grim Fandango is frustrating as hell
By that era I mean graphical adventure games from their inception to when they basically stopped making them in 1997 because they were nearly all godawful

Absolutely. I'm still amazed I beat the first three Monkey Islands, Day of the Tentacle, LOOM, King's Quest V, and Gabriel Knight: The Beast Within, all in the days before GameFAQs and easy internet access.

I think Escape From Monkey Island was when I realized "Ah, graphic adventure games are shitty now."
