the way fursonas used to work before social media seems like it was very different. since the seat of the subculture was the MUCKs, "character" and "player" were separate entities. There was no pressure for the representation to be 1:1. there were more "alt" characters.

In the long run that's better because it pushes socialization back towards IRL.

The MUCKs were full of people who played insanely ornate herm dragons with screen-long descriptions but were basically Boomhauer from King of the Hill IRL. They still managed to make long-lasting friendships and have fun at cons.
