It's somewhat of a cult in the traditional sense, in my opinion. There are tenets, articles of faith and endorsed/prohibited practices but they stop at some point before reaching an actual divine transcendence. They are too unintellectual to be Pythagoreans, to put it that way.
It's like an open-source cult framework. Which is also what Protestantism is like, so there you go.
