There might not have been one available yet. If Chris refused a lawyer, than probably. Otherwise it's on counsel to carefully explain why trial is a bad idea.

It's in their best interest to avoid a spectacle here. We can only hope Chris believes any encouragement to seek a plea deal as reverse psychology and pleads not guilty.
