They much reduce risk of infection, and consequently the risk of onward transmission. The effect of vaccination on metrics of viral load *among* those with breakthrough infections is a side debate; impact on such metrics is not the main way vaccines prevent transmission. /2

They also vastly reduce risk of severe disease. Per CDC, as of 07/26, there have been 1,263 deaths associated with breakthrough infections among 163 million vaccinated (<0.001%). The KFF reports, moreover, that not all states are reporting deaths associated with breakthrough infections by cause of death, which could suggest that this is an overestimate. Are they able to track excess deaths by vaccination status? Seems like a lift, but that's arguably the most precise number.
