Atari has had like 20 owners since 1979. It's been a shell brand since about 1995. Back in the day, the original company did good work.
The original company did good work on hardware. They made some really insane decisions on the software front that drained talent out of the company and destroyed the video game market for years. Activision was formed by disgruntled Atari devs and look at them now.

the market cratering was mostly due to crappy third party software and it's important to note that Bushnell was forced out soon after the VCS was launched because they sold to Warner to get liquidity to sell home systems. Warner was what screwed them.
